Hi, my name is what? My name is who?

My name is not slim shady.

Hey guys!
I'm quite new to the blogging world, so bare with me. I wanted to introduce myself to anyone interested in reading about an aspiring minimalist millennial. I'm 26 years old, born on the first day of Dia De Los Muertos, the proud furbaby momma of 2 pups and 2 cats, ETSU Alumni, peace enthusiast, crochet addict, social worker, wanderlust-er, hiker, amongst many other things.

I'm learning that quality is more important that quantity and that my need for instant gratification can really go against my benefit in the long run.

Bankruptcy is not a shameful experience like most stereotype it to be. I had to file because of medical debt. It is, however, extremely stressful. My 341 (meeting of creditors) is in 3 days and I'm pro-se (I'm representing myself, no lawyer is helping me). Nerves are at an all time high right now! My disclaimer, of course, is that I am not a lawyer and cannot give any legal advice, ever. I just want to share my experience.

It seems like our society is not set up to help us millennials out when it comes to owning property. Costs of living are high and wages are low. Debt is high and equitable property is rare. I want to build my own house, with the help of my contractor friends, and one day retire in that home. With this long term goal in sight, I have to take hold of my finances today, right this moment, to reach my goals.

I work as a social worker with severe child abuse cases. It's rough work, emotionally straining and heart breaking at times. You don't go into this field for the money. I make less than starting out teachers and I've been in the field for 4 years now. My income gets me by, but I've never really lived by a budget before. Instead, every month I would spend money on new things and then freak out when my bills were due and I didn't have enough in the bank to pay them and eat. By embracing and valuing the minimalist lifestyle, I can start putting less value on things, and more value in experiences. These are values that I do have, but often my actions haven't reflected.

Humans are extremely crafty in getting what they want when they put their mind to it. My goal for this blog is to share my journey with others so they know they're not alone and work towards reaching my goals.

Namaste :)
